3½ Years of False Peace

antichrist false peaceThe Antichrist will begin his reign over the nations with a solution to one of the world’s most elusive goals: peace in the Middle East.

He will make a covenant with Israel (Dan. 9:27). It will seem to put an end to the world’s hostility to that small but hugely significant nation. Moreover, as the breaking of the first of seven seals shows, the Antichrist will appear as a conquering hero on a white horse. Instead of war, he will seem to bring peace to the whole earth, as symbolized by his empty bow (Rev. 6:1-2).

But the empty bow will contain the latent threat that he might fill it with arrows against anyone who might oppose his terms of peace. And in fact the peace will suddenly come to an end when the breaking of the second seal reveals him as an aggressor on a red horse, taking peace from the earth and provoking wars (Rev. 6:3-4). The Antichrist will do this in order to gain control over all the world’s armed forces. Then he will crush any opposition to his global rule (Dan. 11.37-39).

Background:

We know the Jewish temple, which fell in A.D. 70, will be rebuilt. Because  at the mid-point of his 7-year reign, the Antichrist will defile the temple’s holy place with the “abomination of desolation” (Mt. 24:15). This breaks the covenant of peace he made with the Jews at the beginning of his reign (Dan. 9:27), and begins the Great Tribulation (Mt. 24:21).

Apparently the Antichrist himself guaranteed the security of the rebuilt temple and of Jerusalem. But after the abomination of desolation, he will allow ungodly Gentiles to trample over the holy city for the second half of his 7-year reign.
